Col Du Tourmalet – Road to Hell

The descent down the Col du Tourmalet!

Coxy has the ‘helmet cam’ on chasing down the rest of the lads all the way down.

(The ‘helmet cam’ was actually a normal camera strapped to a Coxy’s cycle helmet, hence the jerkiness of the camera.)

Lourdes

Last night we stayed in Lourdes, famous for it’s grotto and we headed into town after pitching our tents.

As we arrived in town we had no difficulty locating the grotto as thousands of people were heading in that direction.

We followed along and Johnny G and a few of the lads went down to the grotto to pay their respects.

Afterwards Steve D and Wagga found another nice restaurant whilst the rest of the lads bailed into McDonalds. You probably shouldn’t do that in France but over here you get a beer with your Big Mac.

The Col Du Tourmalet

At the top of the TourmaletToday is the pinnacle of Le Tour. Through the Col Du Tourmalet from Bagneres to Lourdes over the highest road in the Pyrenees.

If you watch it on Thursday 14th July, you’ll see the Tour de France pass along this same route.

The lads cycle together until the Tourmalet starts proper at St Marie De Campan where they stop before the race begins.

They set out as I drive up to find a spot to park 4 -5 km further on and give the lads a chance to grab water which they do as they power past.

Coxy is the lead at this stage, followed by Steve K, Spenna, Ade, Billy and Marty with Blue, Johnno, Johnny, Wagga and Steve D close behind. There is a fifteen minute gap between front and rear at this point.

After they all grab water I head another 4 -5 km further on and we repeat the process but the gap between front and back has now widened.

Coxy - The King of the HillOn up to La Mongie, a famous ski resort but Coxy, Steve K and Spenna have already passed this point so I need to get to the summit.

I arrive just as he gets there for the King of the Hill photo.

All the lads arrive in much the same order within the hour and we can take our photos.

I have to say just driving up this mountain pass is daunting but for the lads to cycle it is a remarkable achievement.

WELL DONE LADS!!!!

The ride down is through the most exciting scenery I’ve ever seen and very thrilling for the lads.

I want to thank them personally for letting me accompany them on their thrilling adventures.

Tarbes – Bagneres-de-Bigorre

Just a short 20 miles this morning for the lads to reach Bagneres which is the base camp for the assault on the Col du Tormalet tomorrow.

As we arrive in Bagneres Wagga, Billy and Spena decide to tackle another climb to get themselves limbered up.

The rest of us head to the Camping le Monloo campsite and we all agree this is the best camp site so far.

Soft lush grass that you can just push your tent pegs in by hand. There’s wifi (obviously), a pool and bar.

The lads now wandered into the town to explore while I sit here in peace.

Let the Train take the strain

How did the lads fare on the train from Toulouse to Tarbes?

Carcassonne – Toulouse

Coxy and Steve switch to slicks

An early start for the lads as we have to crack on today. At Toulouse the lads catch a train to Tarbes. We need to do this to be in reach of the Col du Tormelet for Friday’s ascent.

Still on the Canal du Midi the lads crack on to the meeting point at Castelnaudary. It’s here that the canal path becomes much less rugged and eventually turns to tarmac for the run into Toulouse.

So the lads stop and after a brew switch to slicks for the race for Toulouse.

They fly on to Toulouse while I have to find somewhere to park the van.

Coxy sets the pace at 20mph for the final push and the race is on…

I’ve found somewhere to park behind the station…

The lads arrive at the station and we load the van and we’re off.

Not very remarkable is it? Well, it is if you think about it. Not a single hitch. Now that is remarkable!!

Who won the race? I see Blue in the yellow jersey this morning…

Over the lock
